The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Fatou Bensouda, has announced that Israel will soon be investigated for war crimes in the West Bank and Gaza. Excessive use of force in the 2014 attack on Gaza and the continued building of Israeli settlements on Palestinian land in the West Bank were both cited as possible war crimes. Israel doesn’t really have an answer except to say that the ICC doesn’t have jurisdiction. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s main point appears to be that, as Palestinians have never had an independent state of their own, Israel is not “making war” as “war” requires a state for Israel to make war on.
